The P-51 [fighter], particularly with the advent of the K-14 gyro gunsight and the development of "Clobber Colleges" for the training of fighter pilots in fall 1944, was a decisive element in allied countermeasures against the Jagdverbände [German fighter unit].

En 1944, une innovation importante apparaît sur les P-51D : le montage du collimateur gyroscopique K-14. Par la suite, tous les nouveaux Mustangs sont dotés de cet équipement. Ce viseur, basé sur les modèles Ferranti britanniques, prévoit grâce à un calculateur analogique la position de tir souhaitable, le pilote rentrant uniquement l'envergure de l'adversaire et la distance de tir grâce à une molette sur la manette des gaz.
